Attending the 250th Marine Corps birthday activities in Philadelphia this November? Ken Hopper, board member of The Tun Legacy Foundation, who is leading the planning for the Nov. 7-11 festivities, said, “Come one, come all, come crawl! In honor of the history of the founding of the Marine Corps in the historic Tun, we’ll gather in Philadelphia’s Midtown Village neighborhood to visit some other Philadelphia taverns with great stories. Grab something to eat and toast the Corps,” he said. “And if you’re not already a member, you’ll have a chance to sign up for The Tun® 1775 Club, too.”

The five spots selected for the pay-as-you-go, no host Welcome Gathering Pub Crawl, which begins at 5 p.m. on Fri., Nov. 7, are all favorites with locals, and feature a wide selection on their food and drink menus. Among them will be: McGillin’s Olde Ale House (1310 Drury St.), established in 1860, the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia, and a great place to grab a cheesesteak; BRÜ Craft & Wurst (1318 Chestnut St.), bringing a modern twist to the classic German beer hall and serving sausages, pretzels and Bavarian specialties; Fergie’s Pub (1214 Sansom St.), featuring Guinness onion soup, all-day Irish Breakfast, bangers & mash, fish & chips and shepherd’s pie; Irish pub Finn McCool’s Ale House (118 S. 12th St., 12th & Sansom St.), a great choice for burgers and cheesesteak spring rolls; and Tradesman’s (1322 Chestnut St.), a sports bar known for its menu of slow-smoked barbecue and American whiskeys.

More than 400 people have already signed up for the pub tour, which will honor the role of taverns as gathering places. Look for The Tun® 1775 Club signs at each location to find the group. “These five spots will be great places to meet others who are in town for the weekend,” Hopper said. “Visit one pub or visit them all. We’ll see you at the crawl.”

The Welcome Gathering Pub Crawl continues until 11 p.m.
