General Questions

The Tun™ Tavern is one of the nation’s most historic buildings. Originally constructed in 1693 along Philadelphia’s waterfront, it became the iconic birthplace of six organizations that endure today: the United States Marine Corps, the United States Navy, the Pennsylvania Freemasons, the St. Andrew’s Society, the Society of St. George, and the St. Patrick’s Society, in addition to several visits from the nation’s Founding Fathers – George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and many others.
Since it was razed in 1781, there have been over half a dozen attempts to rebuild the Tun. Given the rich history of the Tun, the Foundation seeks to rebuild the building, honoring the architecture, materials, and layout as it existed in the 1770s to offer a meeting place for the millions of Americans who can trace their organization’s lineage back to this one tavern.
The Tun Tavern Legacy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, whose mission is to rebuild and re-establish The Tun as it was, a functioning mariner’s tavern reminiscent of colonial Philadelphia, serving period-influenced refreshments, food, and entertainment and offering an educational experience through exhibits, historical documents, and special events.
The Tun™ is scheduled to open in November 2025, coinciding with the Navy and Marine Corps 250th Homecoming Celebration in Philadelphia. A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for November 2024.

While the original location of the Tun tavern is under I-95, the new location will be approximately 250 yards from the site, in the heart of Philadelphia’s Old City District.

Donations will be used to rebuild the Tun™ tavern, Peg Mullan’s Beefsteak Club, a museum, and Tun Alley. All profits from operations of The Tun™ will be donated in perpetuity to support veteran causes, Masonic charities, educational scholarships, and qualified charities as determined by The Tun Tavern Legacy Foundation’s independent Board of Directors.

For the first time in 242 years, six organizations have come together, secured land, raised funds, and is moving out on a plan to have the Tun™ tavern, museum, and Peg Mullan’s Beefsteak Club restaurant as it was in 1775 in time for the Navy and Marine Corps’ 250th Homecoming Celebration in 2025.

The Tun Tavern Legacy Foundation is governed by a diverse Board of Directors made up of leaders with significant business, military, and non-profit backgrounds. Visit our Board of Directors page for their biographies.

A “Plankowner” is a special donor class who has made a major contribution to the Foundation. Plankowners will receive special recognition and donation gifts.

The origin of the term “Plankowner” is the implication that a crew member was around when the ship was being built and commissioned, and therefore has bragging rights to the “ownership” of one of the planks in the main deck. Major donors of the Tun™ will receive special recognition based on donation tiers, including a Plankowner certificate.
The Sons and Daughters of the Tun™ membership is an annual program that comes with several benefits, such as pre-release notification of new gifts, events, and other information.
